About
"The enjoyment of scenery employs the mind without fatigue and yet exercises it, tranquilizes it and yet enlivens it; and thus, through the influence of the mind over the body, gives the effect of refreshing rest & reinvigoration to the whole system."
-Frederick Law Olmsted, Yosemite and the Mariposa Grove: A Preliminary Report, 1865
R.scape. Our landscape. Our escape.
Empowering trust in the flowing stability of our environment.
.. food for thought..
Nature, plants, are here for both human and other species to interact with, as a whole, creating OUR landscape. OUR landscape can become OUR escape if designed in a way that sings to our soul.
Our day to days should feel like explorations. I use to word should because we are only on this planet for a short time. What do we explore? How to do we make the best of our time here? What creates a full life? In terms of basics, we need food, water, shelter. Food, water, and shelter come from our environment, and our environment needs those things too. What makes up our environment? There are many scales of what an environment may encompass, plants, wildlife, insects, and so forth. What are these meeting spaces like? Do we feel connected with those we share our environment with? Is there food, water, and shelter for them? Encouraging spaces for these interactions to occur could even happen in your own backyard, or your own place! From our desire to nurture plants and the energetic benefit of having plants around, to blurring the lines of us (humans) and them, in an all encompassing environment, how could plants influence our life? How could we influence plants life?

At the Brown residence it was time for a garden freshen up. The redesign of the garden bed included ideas of a Japanese style garden playing with views, textures, scents, and colour. It was important to incorporate a mix of native, butterfly, and hummingbird attracting species. Plants in their first few years often are more desirable by the little rabbits who roam the neighborhood, therefore to reduce their impact in the first bit, a fence was placed. The last image was taken later in the summer as the Tigers Eyes Sumacs began to fill in.
The brown residence project was completed over a few of days with great help. The project consisted of; shrubs being dug out, transplanting lilies, tilling, spreading fresh soil, installing a rabbit fence, and planting of just over 100 shrubs & perennials.
As our eyes wander from low growing ground cover, to flower, to shrub; our being becomes interested in the texture of the Silver mound, and the scent of the creeping thyme catches drift as we walk across the path.
A former overgrown garden turned into a labyrinth wildflower sanctuary. The layered diversity in plantings provides food, shelter and habitat for a wider community.
As one walks through the sanctuary one may observe a range of plant species. Plant species were chosen based on the food they may provide throughout the seasons, winter interest, potential for aromatics, as well as drought tolerance. Budget was also a consideration. Existing blocks were broken to provide soft steps guiding one through the labyrinth. At the end of the labyrinth is a spot to stop and observe.
An existing backyard design was slightly enhanced filling in some of the spaces with more hydrangeas to continue the balance, flow, and form.
The lush row of hydrangeas is visually satisfying providing a momentary escape.
A fresh slate to reframe an entrance walkway. Globe cedars line the walk as an aspect to remember from a previous dwelling on a different land.
Dogwoods are a shrub species native to Manitoba. Including native species in a design is important to work with the exciting Manitoba ecology and the mix of plants is to encourage biodiversity.
This was a collaborative project with Leaf It To Us. A couple of trees were removed and a few new plantings were added to enrich the existing views. Peonies beside the stairs were added to bring a welcoming springtime scent and colour, a Rosybloom ornamental crabapple to replace a former Rosybloom crabapple, sumac took place of a former butternut, and hostas along the side of the house.
Rosyblooms are excellent food source for birds in winter.
